Algerian Plane Carrying 116 People Disappears from Radar

BREAKING - Algeria's national airline says it has lost contact with one of its planes flying from Burkina Faso. Flight AH5017 had 110 passengers and six crew on board, officials said.

Algerian aviation authorities lost contact with the aircraft en route from Ouagadougou in Burkina Faso to Algiers, about 50 minutes after take-off. Reports say Air Algerie has initiated an “emergency plan” in the search for the flight.

"In keeping with procedures, Air Algerie has launched its emergency plan," Air Algerie officials,
quoted by APS news agency, said.

The plane is chartered from Spanish airline Swiftair who said in a statement that the aircraft was an MD83 and that they were unable to establish contact with the plane. The company said in a notice posted on its website that the aircraft took off from Burkina Faso at 0117 local time and was supposed to land in Algiers at 0510 local time but never reached its destination.

The disappearance of the Air Algerie plane today comes a week to the day after the Malaysia Airlines
