Jonathan is untouchable – EFCC

By Amako Nneji January 12, 2016 10:46

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has explained why Former President Goodluck Jonathan has not been summoned to answer questions in relation to ongoing investigations into the alleged diversion of $2.1 billion by the former National Security Adviser, NSA, Sambo Dasuki.

Chairman of the Commission, Ibrahim Magu, stated this while maintaining that Jonathan may be arrested if found culpable in the arms deal scandal, adding that the commission is delaying the arrest, because no document had been traced to him giving approval for the disbursement of the arms fund.

Magu stated this while speaking with online publishers in Lagos on Monday 11th January, 2015, explaining that investigations into the said funds, which were managed by Dasuki has led to the arrest, detention, questioning and arraignment of so many prominent Nigerians.

Magu, during his meeting with the media chiefs, said all those questioned so far in connection with the $2.1 billion arms deal were people who disbursed or collected it for reasons other than the purchase of arms and ammunition.

“All approvals by former President Jonathan did not mention that it was for political purposes. All the memos approved by him were for the purchase of arms.”

The bulk of the money disbursed from the $2.1 billion had been traced to financing the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and promoting the bid of Jonathan to retain the presidency during the 2015 general election.

The Director of Media and Publicity of the PDP’s Presidential Campaign Organisation, Femi Fani-Kayode, has confirmed he received N1.7 billion for publicity for the 2015 general election.

The National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Olisa Metuh, was said to have received N400 million out of the money, but he has vehemently denied it and has questioned the EFCC and Attorney General of the Federation, AGF, and Minister of Justice for his continued detention.

Other PDP political big weight were also arrested and questioned in connection with the arms deal.

Meanwhile, the PDP has urged Jonathan to speak out on the controversial $2.1 billion meant for the purchase of arms to fight the Boko Haram sect, but which was allegedly shared by some influential politicians.

According to the party, the controversy surrounding the sharing of the money by Dasuki should have attracted Jonathan’s attention by now.

While appealing to the former president, Abdulahi Jalo, the deputy national publicity secretary of the PDP, said that Jonathan should clear the air and tell Nigerians whether he authorized the sharing of the money meant to fight insurgency in the country. He also stressed that those who took part in the sharing of the money should refund it.

“As all of you know, no single kobo can be spent by the federal government without an act of the National Assembly.

“Money earmarked for arms purchase, some people diverted it to something else. So many people that you cannot even expect were involved. Now, darkness has come to light.

“Jonathan is alive, he should clarify whether he asked the National Security Adviser to divert the money meant to fight Boko Haram into his campaign.”
