The Police have arrested a man and his pregnant wife for stealing 10 children from different hospitals in Anambra State.
The Anambra State Police Command paraded the suspects on Monday along with some nurses who were accomplices to the crime and 19 other suspects who were arrested for sundry crimes in the range of murder, kidnapping, and forgery.
Briefing reporters at the Police Headquarters in Amawbia, the state Commissioner of Police, Hassan Karma, gave the account of the activities of the criminals, restating the commitment of the police to fighting crime relentlessly in the state.
He urged the public to cooperate with the police in the areas of giving useful information that would lead to uncovering crimes and arresting criminals in the state.
One of the suspects, Osita Nweke from Amanuke in Awka North, was arrested for strangling to death a woman that feeds him and made away with beverages and other items from her provision store.
But the crime that raised eyebrow was that of a man, Friday Chibueze, and his pregnant wife, Amauche Chibueze, who were into the business of stealing newborn babies from hospitals in connivance with nurses working in such hospitals.
while being interrogated by the police, the suspects mentioned three nurses, Ogechi Okoye of Reigns Hospital, Igboukwu, Ebubechukwu Okpalu of Healthcare Center, Nnobi, and Eberechukwu Okala of Chidera Specialist Hospital, Uga, as accomplices.
Investigation is ongoing for the arrest of one Ezenwanyi who is alleged to be in possession of all the stolen babies.
One of the syndicate suspects, Ogechi Okoye, admitted that a baby was stolen from their hospital while she was on duty but denied any involvement in the crime.
The police commissioner made it clear that with the huge resources expended by the state government to secure lives and property of the citizens across the state, the police were determined to live up to expectation of ridding the state of crime and criminality.
