The police in Abia State have intercepted a commercial bus conveying 13 Nigerian girls who were allegedly about to be trafficked to Gabon. The police also arrested two suspected human traffickers in the bus.
The bus with number plate, AYB349AE, was heading for Oron, Akwa Ibom State, from where the girls would be taken across the border but it was stopped by policemen on patrol.
Our correspondent learnt that the girls, whose ages ranged from 15 to 21 years, were rescued at about 7.40pm on Friday, October 31.
The names of the two suspected human traffickers, attached to the bus, were not supplied by the police.
However, PUNCH Metro learnt that the suspects were transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Umuahia, immediately after the incident.
The Abia State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Ogbonna Godfrey, while confirming the arrests, said the girls and the suspects had been handed over to the Nigeria Immigration Service.
He said, “Yes, the incident happened. The police have handed the rescued girls and the two suspects over to the Nigeria Immigration Service for further investigation. The service is the one handling the matter now.”
