Officials of the Nigerian Customs Services (NCS) yesterday alledgedly beat up the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), General Manager, Landslide Service, Col. John George (rtd) over parking space at the cargo terminal international wing of the Murtala Muhammed Airport (MMA), Lagos.
Daily Independent learnt that trouble started when a Customs officer, identified as Mr Umen, drove a private car with registration number LND 633 CF to park in the parking lots built for revenue generation by FAAN.It was learnt that on getting to the gate of the car park ,the NCS officer refused to pay ,arguing that he is a uniform man and that he would not pay at car park built by government Since he was not allowed to park ,Umen, was said to have gone to mobilise his colleagues, who came according to an eye witness, in two pickup van loaded with armed Customs men.
The eye witness added that the armed Customs men allegedly threatened and beat up the female FAAN staff manning the gate of the park for refusing to allow Umen to park his car.
But when George tried to intervene, he was manhandled and allegedly beaten by the armed Customs officials.
Speaking further, George explained that a circular was sent to all the various security agencies that FAAN would be collecting fee on that particular park for the purpose of revenue generation.
He further explained that only official vehicles would be exempted from paying the fee at the car park and that all the agencies acknowledged receipt of the circular.
The manager noted that it was a surprise to him for a senior Customs officer to engage himself in such a fracas after what the Customs just went through with the clearing agents at the airport
